When my co-workers and I moved the Or Gallery from its previous location at Smithe and Richards, to its current spot at Dunsmuir and Hamilton almost two years ago, we had the distinct feeling we were moving into Vancouver’s Sandwich Quarter. Why? Two principle reasons: Finch’s Teahouse, and the deli counter of So.cial, both of which are justifiably famous for their sandwiches.
Of course, we were giving up a number of nice lunch spots in our old neighbourhood, including the Japadog hotdog stand at Burrard and Smithe. Thankfully, Japadog has opened a slightly closer location at Pender and Burrard, and will soon open their first storefront location on Robson.
Since the Or’s move, a few more spots have opened up, serving up innovative and tasty meals, that in broad terms can be categorized as sandwiches. Here I’m talking about Nuba’s new location in the Dominion tower, and La Taqueria that occupies Nuba’s former location on Hastings just west of Hamilton.
We are also anticipating the Acme Cafe on Hastings between Abbot and Carrall. Having shared many meals with owners Peggy and Alan Hoffman, this place is bound to be amazing.
So why don’t we start an award for sandwiches in Vancouver? It’s time! We have plenty of great contenders. Please send your nominations in the comments below.
