Oh great, as if I needed another reason to visit Gyoza King

Wednesday April 21, 2010

Gyoza King on Robson is one of a handful of restaurants that I often wish were less popular – just so I could feel assured a seat in this amazing eatery. Not always easy to get in, but worth a wait. Everything they serve is perfect, delicious, affordable. So I hope you’ll understand the utter selflessness of this post. Most people would want to keep this place secret.

I am truly noble.

Or rather, I would be, if you didn’t already know how good it was already. So what prompts this post today is not their brilliant food, but the mind-blowing beer I had their yesterday. Sitting at their bar, sharing an Asahi and slurping down a delicate miso ramen, my eye caught a series of beer bottles sporting an intriguing graphic an owl. I was informed by my server that these were Hitachino Nest beers. I’d never heard of these. We ordered a red rice beer. Amazing. Beer made of red rice. Who knew? And the flavour! Dry, but with a really intriguing fruit to it. Like maybe smoked cherries or something. I might expect something this from a Belgian beer – but it seems pretty unique and exciting coming from Japan. I gotta go back and sample some more.
